Baby Tiger was set up in 2002 by a bunch of disgruntled Edinburgh musos who were fed up with the lack of inter-band contacts in our fair city. Where, they cried, were the great gigs? Where was the sense of togetherness, fostered between bands and music-lovers who could meet and share their love of the most interesting and exciting acts around? There must be a place where the local scene and the wider musical community could come together, where the 'support' acts could get contacts to travel outside their normal spheres, and where scenesterism and musical ghettoes were abandoned in favour of eclecticism and inclusivity! There was: Glasgow.
All this should change, they said. And so Baby Tiger was formed. They aimed to set up gigs by artists operating mostly under the radar of the mainstream musical world; to promote the best Scottish music they could find; to bring the two together to ensure that Edinburgh was more firmly located on the big musical map on our bedroom wall; and to drink a lot of beer while doing so.
Since then, Baby Tiger has established itself as a purveyor of the most interesting gigs around, organising the regular Friday and Saturday nights putting on regular shows in various Edinburgh venues, currently The Loft above the Three Sisters on the Cowgate.
They are also co-organisers of Tigerfest, the alternative music festival running throughout May in conjunction with Is This Music? magazine and Fife Council.
